@incollection{de-Vos 2019, abstract = {Abstract: This paper will give some updated information about two roads connecting the Mediterranean coast to the inland of Africa proconsularis and Numidia. As far as the first road is concerned – from Carthage to Theveste – its use in the Byzantine period will be discussed. Of the second road – from Rusicade to Cirta – an overview will be presented. At first they were a sort of twin roads: the first one, in Proconsularis, was built by Hadrian and his legatus pro praetore Publius Metilius Secundus. Before the first road was completed, Hadrian and Sex. Iulius Maior started to build the second one, in Numidia, but under different conditions. Both roads were necessary for the army and also for transporting the onus fiscale to the ports and ship it to Rome, where the grain distributions were a conditio sine qua non: the emperor could not reign without them. In the Appendix three Hadrianic milestones of the road Carthage-Theveste are rediscussed and four milestones of the via nova Rusicadensis are illustrated. Zusammenfassung: Dieser Beitrag wird einige aktualisierte Informationen über zwei Straßen darlegen, die die Mittelmeerküste mit dem Inland der Africa proconsularis und der Numidia verbinden. Im Bezug auf die erste Straße – von Karthago nach Theveste – wird ihr Gebrauch in byzantinischer Zeit diskutiert werden. Zur zweiten Straße – von Rusicade nach Cirta – wird ein Überblick präsentiert. Anfangs waren die beiden Straßen eine Art Zwillingsstraße: die erste, in der Proconsularis, wurde unter Hadrian und seinem legatus pro praetore Publius Metilius Secundus gebaut. Bevor die erste Straße fertiggestellt worden war, begannen Hadrian und Sex. Iulius Maior, die zweite, in Numidia, zu bauen, aber unter anderen Konditionen. Beide Straßen waren notwendig für die Armee und um das onus fiscale zu den Häfen zu transportieren und es nach Rom zu verschiffen, wo die Kornverteilungen eine conditio sine qua non war: der Kaiser konnte ohne sie nicht herrschen. Im Appendix werden drei hadrianische Meilensteine der Straße Karthago-Theveste erneut diskutiert und vier Meilensteine der via nova Ruscicadensis erläutert.}, address = {Berlin/Boston}, author = {de Vos, Mariette}, booktitle = {Proceedings Congress Viae Romanae, Universität Zürich 1-2 Juin 2017}, chapter = {II The Roads of the Empire}, editor = {Kolb, A.}, isbn = {978-3-11-061869-3}, language = {english}, month = {08}, pages = {338-374}, publisher = {Walter de Gruyter}, title = {Twin Roads: the road Carthage-Theveste and the via nova Rusicadensis; some observations and questions}, year = {2019} }
